Canceled: Ball’s Bluff Highway Marker Dedication
June 27, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Due to weather forecast.
A state historical marker issued by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources that highlights the 1861 Civil War Battle of Ball’s Bluff will be dedicated Saturday, June 27 at the sign’s location along the U.S. 15 bypass in Leesburg, about 200 yards north of its intersection with Battlefield Parkway. The event is open to the public.
In the battle, on October 21, 1861, Colonel and Senator Edward D. Baker took command of Union soldiers, and was killed during the battle, becoming “the only sitting U.S. senator ever killed in combat,” in the words of the marker.
The dedication and unveiling ceremony for the marker will begin at 2 p.m. The Battle of Ball’s Bluff marker replaces and expands the text of a previous marker about the battle that was erected in 1928 but was stolen in November of 2014 after it was knocked down. The Friends of Ball’s Bluff Battlefield raised the funds to cover the manufacturing costs for the replacement marker.
