DESCRIPTION:John Vrana [Image by Sky Richardson]Reenactor Jon Vrana will stage two “first-person” one-act dramas in the historic John Wesley Community Church in Waterford: First will be a reenactment of Waterford residents’ hearings before the Southern Claims Commission (organization of the executive branch of the U.S. government from 1871-1873 under President Ulysses S. Grant\, which heard applications from Union sympathizers who had lived in the Southern states during the Civil War for reimbursements for property losses due to U.S. Army confiscations). Second will be “The Long Road Home”: Stories of Confederate soldiers who surrendered after the war and came back home.\nAlso\, local historian Lee Stone will give a brief talk on his new book\, a roster of the Independent Loudoun Rangers. \nLight refreshments. SUMMARY:Five Tales and a Tour: Greengarden\, Historic Mosby Safe House
DESCRIPTION:Come visit one of the most beautiful and historic homes in the Mosby Heritage Area.  The Mosby Heritage Area Association is partnering with the Gettysburg Foundation to open historic Greengarden on Sunday\, April 3.\nThis program will begin at Buchanan Hall outside of Upperville.  Stories featuring the cavalry Battles of Aldie\, Middleburg\, and Upperville\, June 17-21\, 1863\, and Greengarden’s role as a safe house for Mosby’s Rangers will be shared before caravanning over to the home\, located at 22439 Greengarden Road outside of Upperville. \nAt Greengarden\, a National Historic Register site that dates from 1833\, you’ll be able to tour the historic antebellum home.  Additionally\, you’ll get to see a rarity in the heritage area\, a “hidey hole” used by Mosby’s men for a quick escape. \nThis event is a fundraiser for the Mosby Heritage Area Association’s education program that sends professionals into classrooms in the region with local history and a preservation message.  It will be co-hosted by the Gettysburg Foundation.  Tickets are $30 for MHAA members and $40 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:Hayden Mathews\, current President of the Banshee Reeks Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia (BRASV) will present a program on the archeological work that has been done at Banshee Reeks Preserve since its creation.  He’ll discuss some of the representative archeological finds at Banshee and what they have revealed about the human presence here over the last 15\,000 years and the soils\, geology and topography of the preserve\, and how they likely influenced human occupation on the land.\nFriends of Banshee Reeks (FOBR) is privileged to have this exceptional speaker\, accompanied by subject matter experts in archaeology\, with displays of pre-historic and colonial artifacts discovered at Banshee and surrounding areas. We should see the remnants of Skunk Cabbage blooms that flowered in January\, bulging blossoms of Spice Bush and maples\, wood frogs and salamander egg masses and many other indications that spring is just a week away. SUMMARY:DEQ Meeting: Stress on North Fork of Catoctin Creek
DESCRIPTION:In 2008 Virginia Dept of Environmental Quality (DEQ) identified the lower 4-mile reach of North Fork Catoctin Creek from Wheatland to north of Waterford as impaired due to poor aquatic benthic organisms.  Last year a 2-mile reach of upper North Fork in the Hillsboro area was also listed as impaired.\nAt 6 p.m. On August 3rd DEQ staff will present their findings as to the possible causes of the pollution.  This will include a review of stream monitoring data and an analysis of the “stressors”: nutrients\, hydromodification\, toxic chemicals\, sediment organic matter and other possibilities. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Purcellville Library\, 220 East Main Street in Purcellville. \nThere will be a 30-day comment period following the Public Meeting.  Virginia DEQ is looking for your input! Baker took command of Union soldiers\, and was killed during the battle\, becoming “the only sitting U.S. senator ever killed in combat\,” in the words of the marker. \nThe dedication and unveiling ceremony for the marker will begin at 2 p.m. The Battle of Ball’s Bluff marker replaces and expands the text of a previous marker about the battle that was erected in 1928 but was stolen in November of 2014 after it was knocked down. The Friends of Ball’s Bluff Battlefield  raised the funds to cover the manufacturing costs for the replacement marker.
